I started learning to make games around 18 years ago when I was a teenager in Visual Basic, and then GameMaker. I started a handful of projects, with a couple small 2D games that were playable. I don't think I ever really shared them online much, and only a dozen or so friends and family ever played or saw them. I remember struggling to grasp certain concepts, and not knowing where to turn to find the right information.
After high school I was rushed into University and even though I did not follow my major I ended up taking a Computer Science class along the way. I loved it, but ended up going with a different career. Many years went by where I always had a passion for video games, and dreams of games I would make if I had the skills.
One day in early 2024, I decided to dive right in and give it all a solid shot. After getting my feet wet again with coding on some mobile apps, I took Harvard's free CS50 class over a couple months and absolutely loved it! Mutant Mayhem was actually born as the final project for that class! So, I did a few weeks of Unity and game programming tutorials on Udemy before starting work on Mutant Mayhem.
I was able to put just under 1000 hours of work into the game in 3 months, and had a pretty decent grasp of things before a 2 month break for family, and going back at it again. This time around, though, I've got 2 part time jobs to keep me surviving with as much free time as possible for development and learning. I plan to finish and ship Mutant Mayhem on PC, Mac, Linux and Android.
That's where I am as of October, 2024.
I have almost zero developer friends, so I'm always open to talking game dev or comparing notes.
